En 2004, à la mort de sa femme, IvÆn, écrivain débutant et responsable dÆun misérable cabinet vétérinaire de La Havane, revient sur sa rencontre en 1977 avec un homme mystérieux qui se promenait sur la plage avec deux lévriers barzoï. Après quelques conversations, < lÆhomme qui aimait les chiens > lui fait des confidences sur lÆassassin de Trotski, Ramn Mercader, quÆil semble connaître intimement. Grâce à ces confidences, IvÆn reconstruit les trajectoires de Lev Davidovich Bronstein, appelé aussi Trotski, et de Ramn Mercader, connu aussi sous le nom de Jacques Mornard, et la façon dont ils sont devenus victime et bourreau de lÆun des crimes les plus révélateurs du XXe siècle. Il suit ces deux itinéraires, à partir de lÆexil de lÆun et de lÆenfance de lÆautre, et leur rencontre à Mexico. Ces deux histoires prennent tout leur sens lorsque le Cubain y projette ses aventures privées et intellectuelles dans la Cuba contemporaine. Leonardo Padura, dans une écriture puissante, fait, à travers des personnages ambigus et convaincants, lÆhistoire des conséquences du mensonge idéologique et de sa force de destruction sur lÆutopie la plus importante du XXe siècle et de ses retombées actuelles dans la vie des individus, en particulier à Cuba. Un très grand livre.
